FUNdamentals Playroom seeks to improve child development by engaging caregivers in supporting creative, child directed play in a safe, developmentally appropriate space within the community for all young children.

Values

• Play has intrinsic value. In and of itself play is a learning experience which enhances a child's development in intellectual, social, emotional and physical ways.

• Parents and Caregivers are vital in creating an environment of acceptance and learning during play. Parents are a child's first teacher; how a parent approaches play impacts what a child takes from each play situation.

• All children should have access to a safe play environment regardless of socioeconomic background, abilities or other factors which may limit access to play.

• All caregivers should have access to a supportive community in which they can safely explore their own styles and skills as playmates and caregivers.

• All children are valued for the skills and abilities they have, while being allowed to live into a greater potential.

Vision

Every neighborhood and community should have an early childhood drop-in center where both children and caregivers are able to expand their skills. Each center should reflect what is culturally relevant to the specific community, yet allow for families to experience facets of life not typically experienced in their daily lives. We anticipate opening other playrooms using the first one as format. It is our hope that these centers can be developed as economically as possible so that all communities can share in the experience of having a supportive community where children can play and grow.
